It's recommended by Felix's 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Westergom, who also held a party in her class that mimics the one in the book.
The story is about a little girl, Opal, who moved to a new place in a summer with her father (a preacher), adopted a dog (Winn-Dixie), and made new friends with the help of the dog. Opal's mom left the family when she was born, and never came back.
What's learned: enjoy life, enjoy reading, make new friends, all these help to get rid of sadness and loneliness.

- Opal asked dad (the preacher) to tell her ten things about her absent mother, one for each year she has been alive.
